Low budget smartphone category is a really tricky category to look out for a smartphone as you aren't getting any good specs here but still you want the best experience. The two players which I think are the best in this category are the Nokia XL and the Nokia lumia 525!
So which one among these? let's find out!
BUILD AND DESIGN.
When it comes to the build quality, both feature the traditional Nokia polycarbonate build which feels great in the hand and doesn't feel cheap like other plastic phones.
The back of the lumia 525 is a little glossy which I am not really fan of but it is good given the price.
The Nokia XL is however is a little heavy weighing 190 grams versus the 124 grams of the Lumia 525 which can be because of the bigger display which will talk about later in this article.
You won't be making any compromises or choosing a cheap phone by going for either phone.
DISPLAY.
When it comes to display, both the devices have the same resolution that is 480x800 pixels but because of the different sizes, the display looks different too.
The Nokia XL rocks IPS LCD 5 inches display resulting in a pixel density of 187ppi which isn't quite impressive and looks sometimes distorted while watching high definition movies and games.
While the Nokia lumia 525 packs the same display as on the lumia 520 that is a 4 inches IPS LCD with a pixel density of 233ppi which is not the best either but looks great with good color reproduction, decent viewing angles and adequate outdoor visibility.
In the design category, the lumia 525 wins with a better display.
HARDWARE.
In the connectivity aspect, both phones share the same options including Bluetooth, Wifi hotspot and 3G but the areas where the lumia 525 gets the advantage it can give you speed on HSDPA of 21.7 Mbps against the 7.2 Mbps of the Nokia XL.
Another area where it gets advantage is that it supports Bluetooth v4.0 while the Nokia XL supports Bluetooth v3.0!
In the storage department, both the phones support Mirco SD expansion up to 32GB with the on board 4GB of internal memory on Nokia XL and 64GB with the already available internal memory of 8GB on the Nokia lumia 525.
When we talk about the battery, the Nokia XL runs on a bigger battery of 2000mAH that is removable which is a always welcomed feature while the Nokia lumia 525 works on a 1430mAH removable battery.
As you can tell by the size, the Nokia XL can give a whole lot of battery backup compared to the Nokia lumia 525. You can get a time period of 1.5days on the Nokia XL while you get only a day on the Lumia 525.
SOFTWARE.
The biggest difference between the two phones lies here. The Lumia 525 runs on Microsoft’s Windows Phone OS while the XL uses Nokia X Software, a forked version of Android. In terms of out of the box features, both devices come integrated with Nokia and Microsoft services like Outlook, Skype, HERE maps, Nokia MixRadio and what not.
Nokia XL is capable of running most of the android apps which is quite helpful at times but lumia 525 is no loser too as I said with better operating system and stable apps.
While as a plus point, you can run android apps on the Nokia XL, you won't be able to live a "lag-free" life as Nokia XL with low end specs and Android , lags a couple of times!
Plus, you also get the ability to multi-task on the lumia 525 which you just can't on the Nokia XL.
You will also get the windows phone 8.1 update on the lumia 525 which is quite a big and ground breaking update with features like cortana, action center and more!
So, I would still advice to go with windows phone in the low end category for better experience, however if you are an app addict, the Nokia XL is no bad too.
PERFORMANCE.
Now, in performance both the phones are not really that different but I do have a winner.
Nokia XL powers on the Qualcomm MSM8225 Snapdragon S4 Play Dual-core 1 GHz Cortex-A5 with Adreno 203 assisted with 768MB of RAM which isn't quite great if look from a android perspective but it is not that bad either. The processor is capable of giving you a decent power with the ability to run most of the games ( not on high graphics though ).
While on the other side, we have the lumia 525 Qualcomm MSM8222 Dual-core 1 GHz with Adreno 305 assisted with 1GB RAM which is a lot better than the Nokia XL as it runs on a lighter operating system and is capable of running games on high graphics too.
Here, I have to say that the lumia 525 wins with lighter operating system and powerful specs.
CAMERA.
Both share the same rear facing camera that is the 5MP autofocus shooter which is capable of capturing decent photos in sufficient lighting but is not quite great in low light.
But you get some advantages on the Nokia XL like flash support and a 2MP secondary camera for your selfies and video calls.
Places where the lumia 525 gets the advantage is the ability to record 720p while the Nokia XL can only record 480p videos. Another area where the lumia 525 gets the advantage is the Nokia camera apps.
So, it is up to you which one you want, image quality is similar on both. I would probably go with the Nokia XL because of the flash support and secondary camera.
TO SUM UP...
The Nokia lumia 525 is still faster than the Nokia XL but if you want more apps and games, go with the Nokia XL. As said in my Nokia XL review, it totally depends on the price at which the Nokia XL launches.
