When it comes to flagships, it is really hard to compare them because all of them have something that you are going to miss on the other! And it is even more difficult to buy one unless you are in love with any one of them! All of the flagships out there have something that makes them non perfect in a way and It can be the battery, camera or the built quality!

But at the end of the day, you gotta choose one and decide which one you want to buy and i am going to help you do so!

This is the Samsung galaxy s5 vs the HTC one M8! So let us begin!

The age old battle of plastic vs metal comes to the fore once again, but both devices have a lot more than just build material and quality to offer. It’ll be quite interesting to see how they stack up against each other.

DESIGN.

At the first glance of both the devices, they could be not more different in looks and that extends to the built quality and the material used!

It has been Always a never ending battle when it comes to plastic and metal! Different customers have different choices, some prefer plastic that is less slippery or shiny! On the other hand, some prefer metal that brings much more class and looks to a phone!

The design of the galaxy s5 is not changed that much when we look at the predecessor, galaxy s4 and I don't think a lot of people are going to appreciate that! It has the same button layout, on the sides with the volume rocker to the left and power button on the right. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Samsung device without a physical home button on the front that is starting to look old and dull, but this time featuring an integrated fingerprint scanner that is quite a headache in usage. The home button is once again flanked by two capacitive keys, but now comes with a Recent Apps key instead of the Menu button from previous iterations. This is definitely a positive change, that allows for a more traditional multi-tasking experience. The sides are ridged, but they’re still flat enough to feel good in the hand.

The biggest Change however in the design is on the back which is still plastic but now features the already well-known dimpled design. It’s probably the most polarizing aspect of the design, as many view it as a setback even from the faux leather texture of the  Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

Moving over to the HTC one M8, you will find a curved aluminium design that feels perfectly in hands, i found it a little slippery at times! On the back, you will get a hairline brushed look that points towards a fantastic and premium design! The new HTC one M8 when compared to the last year's M7 has much more metal in it that can be a drawback for some but i just love how it feels!

The HTC One (M8) will definitely turn heads and manages to look very executive in the process. Another noticeable difference at the back is the addition of a secondary camera at the very top of the back, the Duo Camera that helps with capturing depth data.

The biggest change however is the polycarbonate on the sides that used be on the M7 is eliminated by metal, the only place where you will find it is on the top that also consists on an IR blaster and the power button!

The location of the power button can be difficult if you are coming from a non HTC device but you kind of get the hang of it plus the tap to wake feature is there that allows to forget about the power button completely!

Finally up front, you get a larger 5-inch screen, and also making a return, the great performing BoomSound speakers at the top and bottom, making for a taller device all around, a little bit taller than the Samsung Galaxy S5!

The HTC one M8 is also narrower than the samsung galaxy s5 which makes going from left to right a little bit easier!

To conclude, when it comes to built quality, the HTC one M8 is no doubt the winner but when it comes to handling, the samsung galaxy s5 gets a little edge!

DISPLAY.

When it comes to displays in flagships, it is always basically the same, 1080p but the thing that matters here is the technology used and sometimes the looks of operating system make some difference!

The Samsung Galaxy S5 features the classic Super AMOLED display at 5.1-inch, while the Super LCD 3 screen of the HTC One (M8) is now 5-inch, up from 4.7-inch on the M7.

On the Samsung Galaxy S5, the colours are vibrant and beautiful, you would really feel them coming out of your phone! Viewing angles are great too and you will find no difficulty in viewing your phone in any direction! After all, DisplayMate praised the display of this smartphone, noting it has the highest brightness, lowest reflectance, and highest colour accuracy of any phone, among other accolades.

On the other hand we have the Super LCD 3 display of the HTC one M8 that looks gorgeous and colours are perfect too! Viewing angles are fantastic as always!

If I have to pick one, it will be the HTC one M8 with much more accurate contrast and Sense 6 makes the experience even better!

HARDWARE.

When it comes to Hardware, Samsung Galaxy S5 consists of a removable ( always a welcomed feature) 2800 mAh battery and a micro SD slot!

Other hardware features of the S5 includes IP67 approval that means it is waterproof like Sony's phones, a heartrate monitor if you are TOO much health conscious and a fingerprint scanner which is not quite accurate as on the Iphone 5S!

And finally, when it comes to battery life, I found the phone capable of handling heavy usage comfortably over a 12 hour period of time. Especially with the power saving features it offers, you should easily get a full day use out of the Galaxy S5, and of course, we have the option to replace the battery on the go if required.

When it comes to the HTC one M8, you get a non removable 2600 mAh battery and finally a micro SD card which i found a real bummer in the M7!
HTC one M8 may not consist of heartrate or fingerprint scanner but you do get a lot of touches and swipes to activate the phone without moving your finger to the power button!

There’s little to say about the speakers on the back of the Galaxy S5. They provide a pretty one-dimensional sound, and they pale in comparison to the enhanced BoomSound speakers on the M8, with their louder, deeper sound.
When it comes to the battery of the One (M8), you may get a slightly smaller 2,600 mAh unit, but you should have no trouble going from dawn to dusk, and even further if you use the power saving features of the phone.
Both phones have their own unique hardware features but i find the features on the HTC one M8 much more useful like the boomsound or the swipes! Samsung galaxy S5 is great in its own way too!

SOFTWARE.

Software is the whole different story when it comes to these two particular device as both are really different in functionality!
Both come with android kitkat 4.4 but the real difference is in the UIs that both the companies upgraded a little bit!

On the Samsung Galaxy S5, the touchwiz is revamped with new icons, a different and still messed up settings app, MY MAGAZINE to compete with blinkfeed and the one thing i am loving the most that is touchwiz is now optimized for performance and doesn't lag like the previous versions!
My Magazine app on the Galaxy S5 is not as vast as the blinkfeed but i believe that it will be much more capable in the upcoming updates, as a matter of fact though, the phone lags when the My Magazine is refreshed for new stories! Other features like gestures and multi-window are still there and are helpful at times!
While on the HTC one M8 that comes with the Sense 6 is a whole different story!

The Sense 6 UI is much more fast, good looking and stable! The blinkfeed is much more useful and can replace your current news reader! All the things are perfectly placed and are useful in their own ways!
To sum up, multi-taskers will enjoy the slew of tools available on the Samsung Galaxy S5, while those looking for a minimalistic style and a better homescreen experience will opt for HTC One (M8).

PERFORMANCE.

Performance is almost never a problem when it comes to flagships and these two stack up on that pretty nicely!

Either device will give you a really great experience, as both feature the best processing package currently available. You get the quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 on both the Western version of the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the HTC One (M8), with the former clocked at a faster 2.5 GHz, compared to the 2.3 GHz of the latter. Backed by the Adreno 330 GPU and 2 GB of RAM, you should have no trouble getting anything done on either of these phones from gaming to heavy multitasking!

While you always hear about touchwiz laging cases, this time the case is quite different as the newer version of the touchwiz is quite stable and you will face no lags in day to day usage!
Sense UI is always exceptional when it comes to performance and the new HTC one M8 is no exception!

No matter which one you choose, you will always get the best experience!
However if you are from a region where Exynos processor comes in Samsung phones (Ex. India) , I recommend you go for the HTC one M8!

CAMERA.

Samsung did away with some of the many modes on the Galaxy S4 app, and added a few key ones, such as Live HDR and Selective Focus. Live HDR is nice to have when you want to see if shooting in HDR will actually improve your picture. Selective Focus combines multiple images to give you a customizable level of focus; it works well when executed properly, but that definitely doesn’t happen every time.
Samsung’s new 16 MP ISOCELL camera uses updated tech to improve general image quality, and the result is a camera that yields vivid photos with good levels of detail.
While on the other end, HTC decided to stick with the same 4 Ultrapixel shooter that was on the M7!
Additional features include the Duo Cameras that add depth to your image and you can actually focus on any part of the image after anytime you click a photo! Unlike the Galaxy S5, it is much easier to use it!
Another great feature is the Zoes, which are still pretty fun to use and are available for anyone that wants to create nice memories while taking this camera out. Unfortunately, there are limitations to a camera with such a low megapixel count, and it definitely shows when you zoom into any photo!]
Pictures on the HTC one M8 unlike the galaxy S5 are little washed out and lack some dynamic range!
The clear winner in this category is the Samsung Galaxy S5 which shoots much clear and detailed photos!
However if you are not a camera enthusiast and love the features like the Duo cameras of the HTC one M8, then it is great too if you just want to post your photos to social media!

TO SUM UP...

While the HTC one M8 does brings some class to you with its premium design and simplistic UI, on the contrary, you should go for the Galaxy S5 if you want a better camera, more features and scanners!
Performance is same on both devices with the display slightly looks better on the HTC one M8!
I would generally prefer the HTC one M8 because i won't use any of the scanners i am paying for, i like the boomsound speakers, i hate touchwiz and i would prefer the Duo cameras!
